Rescues are not shelters, but rather all volunteer-run organizations that place at-risk shelter pets in foster homes until a permanent home can be found for them. Rescues are generally overworked, overrun and overwhelmed, but they carry on because they love a particular breed, or in the case of all-breed rescues, they just want to save as many pets as they can. If you're looking for a purebreed dog, rescues are often the best place to start.
