The Shelter

enter.jpg

Not counting quarantine areas, the shelter can house 80 dogs and 66 cats. The facility includes an intake area, where animals receive their first medical attention and stay "on hold" for five days. If no owner calls, they then move to the adoption area. For cats, that means one of three cat rooms; for dogs, it means a run in one of the courtyard kennels.

There's also a fenced area at the front of the shelter called The Path Home.

This wooded acre allows shelter visitors to take animals on a get-to-know-you walk, or bond with them in one of two smaller enclosed play pens. Created in 1998 with the assistance of Americorps volunteers, The Path Home has been a wonderful addition to the shelter.

Our Executive Director

benblack.jpg

The Frances R. Willis SPCA is pleased to welcome Ben Black as our first-ever Executive Director. Ben is a 2000 graduate of the University of Tennessee with a degree in urban planning and a minor in business. More importantly, he's a real animal person: just two weeks after joining the SPCA, Ben adopted a mastiff mix in urgent need. If you visit the shelter you'll probably see Butch on Ben's heels. In his new job, Ben will be responsible for fundraising, public relations, and long-range planning for shelter. A native of Clinton, North Carolina, he currently resides with his wife Paige in West Ashley.

Our Ambassador

logo.jpg

Meet Wiggles, our shelter ambassador. In this picture, he's striking his favorite pose, known as Tickle My Tummy. Wiggles is the happiest, zaniest dog we've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Since becoming the shelter's official greeter, Wiggles has acquired his own run, complete with dogloo and enough toys for ten dogs. Wiggles will soon be receiving obedience training so that he can accompany us on public outings. Stop by the shelter and say hi to Wiggles today!

Our Mouser

sebastian.jpg

Sebastian was a barn cat before he came to us. He was adopted once, but returned because he hid under the couch. Once Sebastian was promoted from adoptable to Resident Mousecatcher in the main kitchen, he found his niche. He caught two mice his very first day on the job! Sebastian is having the time of his life and walks with a new swagger in his step.
